RYA Powerboat Handling (level 2)

Il Corso

A formal course to develop you as a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft. The course takes 2 days and includes coastal theory and preparation for anyone who will be powerboating on the sea and for those wanting to apply for an ICC. Candidates do not require a Level 1 certificate to attend a Level 2 course.

Metodo d'insegnamento

Using a small but powerful RHIB we will take you through low speed handling manoeuvres and practice coming alongside, tying up and mooring for an extended period. High-speed lessons will allow students and boat-owners alike to be confident of moving at higher speeds, safely and on-the-water and on land discussions of windage, tides, anchoring, passage-making, man overboard make a full two days.

Course duration is 16 hours and is run in two, preferably consecutive, days (with a breaks for lunch).

Programma

  • Use of a trailer or launching trolley
  • Consideration of launching and sea conditions, including hazards and obstructions
  • Preparing the boat, lines, fenders, safety equipment, fuel tanks, lines and safety gear
  • Tying the relevant knots
  • Personal buoyancy and appropriate clothing
  • Use of lines, fenders, anchor and warp, bailer, fire extinguisher, pump, paddles, oars, compass flares, torch whistle, charts, first aid kit, sharp knife
  • Loading and the effect on handling and performance, effect on balance and trim
  • Handling characteristics of displacement boats, rudder steered craft and shaft driven vessels
  • Crewing and the minimum number in a faster craft and the importance of keeping a look-out
  • The importance of boat control in waves and adequate seating to minimise the possibility of back injury
  • Awareness of other water users, including the effects of wash
  • Steering, controls, the effect of current or tidal stream
  • Handling a boat at planing speed; using trim tabs and power trim
  • Propeller angle and immersion, shallow drive, planing and displacement speed handling
  • Requirements and changes when using tiller steering or console steering
  • Demonstrating the use of an appropriate length kill cord and its use at all times
  • Carry out low speed manoeuvres including – turning in a confined area, controlling the effect of wind on the bow, holding off
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the danger of flooding when going astern
  • Handle a boat at planing speed – S-turns and U-turns
  • Approaching and securing to a buoy
  • Anchoring, including correct approach in various conditions, depth of water, holding ground, scope required
  • Leaving and coming alongside other vessels and quaysides
  • Towing and being towed

We will provide the boat, instructor and a buoyancy aid. An RYA textbooks covering the activities (and more) can be purchased from the shop. You should bring your own sailing shoes or old trainers for use in the RHIB.
