RYA Youth Stage 3 (Dinghy)

2 days

The course

An RYA youth course to develop your skills and prepares you for sailing without an instructor on board. The course follows a syllabus set by the RYA which covers safety, launching, returning and sailing upwind and downwind . A capsize drill is included.

Teaching method

Initially in a small dinghy or catamaran, with one instructor per boat, we will give you a chance to helm and crew the boat, developing a full range of sailing skills. The instructor will demonstrate manoeuvres and teaching you to manage the boat and crew yourself. We use the RYA method for two-handed dinghies for all students but can offer the option of two-person dinghies and catamarans.

Course and session timing

Stage 3 is the third course in the RYA progression for youth sailors (up to 16) who will have sailed before. Students must be confident in and around water and we can accommodate most people, regardless of your normal activity levels. Check with us if in any doubt. We recommend that aspiring keelboat and catamaran sailors complete this dinghy courses to at least stage 2 before moving to a catamaran.

Pre-course experience

A wonderful course suiting all which assumes a skill level equivalent to a Youth Stage 2. The course can be combined with a Stage 4 course over a 3-day period or equivalent hours for those who want to progress two stages in one week. Students without a Youth Stage 2 certificate but who can demonstrate in a short on-the-water session that they can already helm a dinghy can take Stage 3 as their first formal course.
